House by Holly is where I share my love of home styling and inexpensive ideas, one adventure at a time.  I started House by Holly in 2012 mostly because I almost always have a DIY project waiting in the wings.  Why not share? I am easily inspired and nothing makes me happier than finding a random item in the clearance isle and designing a whole room around it.

Are you looking for some ideas to freshen up your home?  House by Holly offers affordable home styling services both locally and on-line.  Please email HousebyHolly@yahoo.com for more details.

Services include: shopping for accessories and/or furniture, picking a paint color for a room, staging a home for re-sale, organizing a tag sale, reupholstering furniture, organizing your home, how to display a collection, or refinishing furniture.

  1. Love your style of decorating. I have 2 cabinets on either side of my fire place. One is painted and the other is a wood entertainment center. Should they both be painted the same color. The entertainment center is larger and it always looks so unbalanced.

  2. Thanks so much!
You could paint them the same color to add balance and a sense of cohesiveness. Or you could create balance by bringing a large item over to the smaller cabinet. Perhaps a large lantern, ottoman or basket on the floor...I would also suggest using a few larger pieces to accessorize within the smaller cabinet instead of a lot of little pieces.
If you would like some more feed back email me some pics of the room.
    Thanks for stopping by,
    Holly

  6. Well done! What a difference. I am about to take on a similar project at my cottage. Dark knotty pine walls with a shiny layer of varnish. Looking back on this project, would you have done anything differently? I am debating on using bin and paint OR cutting 8-inch strips of underlayment and doing horizontal shiplap. (I did this at my house and love it) I think they would probably take about the same amount of time, especially if I need to paint and prime a number of coats. Thanks.
